Who is given Bharat Ratna?
Let us tell you that Bharat Ratna is given to those people who have done important work in any field in the country. Also, it has increased the country’s pride at the international level. The award of Bharat Ratna was started on 2 January 1954 by the then President Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Bharat Ratna was first given to C. Rajagopalachari, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and CV Raman. At that time this award was given only to living persons. Bharat Ratna is given to maximum three people in a year.
When was Bharat Ratna awarded posthumously for the first time?
During the year 1955, the rules for awarding Bharat Ratna were changed and the provision of awarding it posthumously was also added. Talking about giving Bharat Ratna posthumously, in this situation former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri was the first to be honored. He was awarded Bharat Ratna in 1966, even before that he died in Tashkent. Till now 16 personalities have been given Bharat Ratna posthumously. Karpoori Thakur is the 17th such person.
What does a person awarded Bharat Ratna get?
The person awarded Bharat Ratna is given a certificate and medal from the Central Government. No amount of money comes with this honour. However, government departments provide many types of facilities to the honored person.
If a person awarded Bharat Ratna visits any state, the government there welcomes him as a guest of the state. They are provided transportation, boarding and lodging facilities in the state. Their family members like spouse and children also get facilities. They are also given personal staff and drivers.
What are the rules for the family if they receive honors posthumously?
When a person is posthumously awarded Bharat Ratna, his name is verbally added Bharat Ratna Awardee. In fact, according to Article 18(1) of the Indian Constitution, award recipients cannot use ‘Bharat Ratna’ as a prefix or suffix to their names.
They can add ‘Bharat Ratna awarded by the President’ or ‘Bharat Ratna Award Recipient’ in their resume, visiting card, letter head etc. At the same time, no written instructions have been issued yet regarding facilities for his family. There is no standard to provide them any kind of facilities. However, the state governments at their level respect and provide facilities to the family members of respected personalities.
